Numbers add up at suburban egg company
The numbers add up at south suburban egg pasteurizing company

October 1, 2008

Lansing-based National Pasteurized Eggs is cracking the subject of contaminated eggs wide open.

The south suburban company, which recently produced its 600 millionth pasteurized egg, uses a patented process to kill bacteria and viruses found within shell eggs.

The method, which kills germs without cooking the egg, is an all-natural water bath that enables the company to pasteurize large quantities of eggs at one time, uses the exact water temperature needed to kill contaminants, including salmonella.

After the water bath, eggs are sealed with a food-grade wax to preserve freshness and prevent environmental contamination.

Once the eggs pass all inspections, they are stamped with a red circle "P" identifying them as NPE certified pasteurized product.

The eggs are distributed under the label Davidson's Safest Choice. For more information, call (708) 418-8500 or visit www.safeeggs.com.
