A second person with swine flu in Kane County has died, health officials reported Friday.
A 41-year-old Elgin woman who had "underlying medical conditions" died Monday within the county, but a spokesman from the Kane County Health Department declined to release additional details about the woman. Spokesman Tom Schlueter generally said "underlying" ailments could include chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes or heart problems.
"The fact is, the flu virus is out there and it affects those with ... weakened immune systems," Schlueter said.
A 42-year-old man from Kane County, who also had H1N1, died in May. The local deaths fit into the age group that has seen the majority of Illinois' deaths associated with H1N1. Of 36 deaths reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health, 17 were between the age of 25 and 49.
Also Friday, Kane health officials announced the county had received another 5,000 vaccine doses were received on Thursday. Those doses will be available by appointment through the end of December, Schlueter explained. So far, Kane has received 17,000 doses of the 64,000 it ordered.
"It's coming in as a trickle," Schlueter said of the vaccines, adding the county likely won't get enough to hold more mass flu shot clinics.
