CARPENTERSVILLE — The Community Unit School District 300 Board of Education voted Monday to raise the salaries of some nonunion employees.
That 2 percent increase in pay will affect 76 school district employees in the current school year, according to D300 Human Resources Director John Light.
Those raises will cost the district an additional $89,000 for 2009-2010, retroactive to July 1.
The $89,000 includes not only the 2 percent increase in those salaries, but also the resulting increases in retirement contributions and similar benefits. Health insurance is not affected by the raises.
There was no discussion on the measure, but there was some dissent. School Board President Joe Stevens and Trustee Monica Clark each voted against the raises, and Trustee Anne Miller was not present, meaning it passed with only four votes.
Affected employees represent a "pretty diverse group," Light said.
"You have people from IT in there. You have office staff in there. You have nurses in there. It's kind of a hodge-podge."
The employees' current salaries range from about $15,840 to about $66,100, he said.
Those salaries will rise to about $16,160 and $67,430, respectively, Light said.
Those employees do not include administrators or teachers. All the school district's teachers are represented by LEAD, the Local Education Association of District 300, the HR director said.
The raises come at the same time D300 is negotiating with a similar number of employees who now are represented by DESPA, the District 300 Educational Support Personnel Association.
Those employees hold "primarily clerical" jobs, according to Light. In the past five months, they petitioned the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board to unionize, and the labor relations board ruled they could join the existing bargaining unit.
Light said the money to raise the salaries of the nonunion employees has been budgeted in D300's general education fund.
