11th conviction gets man a stint in federal prison

November 6, 2009

After 10 stays in state prison, an Aurora man will get to look through federal cell bars.

Christopher Mosby, 44, was sentenced this week to five years in federal prison on drug charges, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago. Mosby was one of eight people arrested in 2008 during "Operation Land O' Lakes" -- a reference to "butter" made by drug dealers.

Mosby pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute drugs and using a phone to commit a felony, according to court records.

Before getting a federal sentence, Mosby had been sentenced to terms in state prison 10 times, including eight drug-related convictions. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence in a Vandalia, Ill., prison on a Kane County drug charge. When he finishes that term, he will have to serve two consecutive 30-month sentences in federal prison, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

For his local charges Mosby was sentenced to prison in Illinois, but the federal conviction means he could be sent anywhere in the country.

The Land O' Lakes sweep targeted members of the Maniac Latin Disciples for selling crack cocaine in Aurora and surrounding communities.

Several other people arrested in the same sweep have been sentenced.

Auroran Antoine Jackson, 26, was sentenced to five years for distribution of cocaine, according to court records.

Crystal Jackson, 25, of Naperville, pleaded guilty to using a communication facility to conspire to possess a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, court records said. She was sentenced to 12 months.

Jacque Buckley, 34, of Aurora, pleaded guilty to distribution of cocaine and was sentenced to more than 7-1/2 years in federal prison and $6,250 in fines.

Martin Pegues, 33, of Aurora, pleaded guilty to distributing a controlled substance and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The status of Naperville resident Martel Jackson, 28; Lorenzo Ingram, 25, of Aurora; and Robert Joyner, 44, of Batavia; who were all arrested in the same sweep, was not clear Thursday.
