Freshman U.S. Rep. Bill Foster has nearly twice as much cash in the final weeks of the 14th District race over Republican Jim Oberweis, according campaign estimates. Foster's cash on hand is approaching $692,000. Oberweis has $324,000.

The city will continue its holiday tradition of sending gifts to Aurora residents in military service who are stationed in the United States or overseas. Service personnel will receive a one-pound box of mixed nuts and a card for the holidays.

The Kane County Forest Preserve has purchased the Fox Valley Ice Arena here for $6.25 million. Officials announced the purchase Tuesday during a Forest Preserve Commission meeting. Commissioners approved a budget transfer to make the purchase.

The United States Navy traces its origin to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on Oct. 13, 1775, by authorizing the procurement and manning of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munition ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a Naval Committee to supervise the work. Altogether, the Continental Navy numbered some 50 ships over the course of the war, with approximately 20 warships active at its maximum strength.

The unstable economy is making DuPage County Board members nervous about going into debt for a newly proposed $220 million capital plan.

West Sider Susan Forbes had only one question for the Aurora City Council Tuesday night, as they debated whether to pass their Crime-Free Housing Initiative. "What the hell took so long?" Forbes said. "This is what this city needs."

Gas prices are falling amid recent concerns about the U.S. and global economy. However, consumers are paying much more at the pump than they did a year ago. That could affect the Nov. 4 presidential election.
